Heavy rain, strong wind mars Hari Raya celebration in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Heavy rain, strong winds and a freak storm this afternoon caused several trees to be uprooted here.

The Penang Island City Council, on its Facebook page, said they received a complaint of uprooted trees at Lebuh Union, which damaged a car.

It said their team was immediately despatched to the scene to clear the debris.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

"As a preparation to face the uncertain weather, MBPP's Skuad Pantas immediately responded to the complaint.

"We thank the Fire and Rescue Department for assisting us to move the tree.

"The affected stretch will be opened to traffic once clearing works are completed," it added.

Meanwhile, netizens also took to the Penang Press Facebook page to share the heavy rain and strong wind phenomenon in their areas.

Among the affected areas were Gelugor, Air Itam, Teluk Bahang, Bayan Lepas and Sungai Ara on the island.

Also affected were Bukit Mertajam, Teluk Air Tawar, Penaga and Nibong Tebal on the mainland.

Netizen Arif Farhan shared how a tent sent up outside his house for the Hari Raya celebration ended up on the roof of his house due to the storm.

Another netizen Jiwa Tenang also shared how part of the roof of his house flew off, resulting in flooding inside the house.
