MIRI: Women and Child Development Deputy Minister Datuk Rosey Yunus thinks Sarawak could see significant economic opportunities if the Niah National Park in Miri is recognised as a Unesco World Heritage Site, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.
During an Aidilfitri open house event, Rosey said that such recognition would notably boost the tourism sector, attracting not only international visitors but also domestic tourists.
"The economic impact would be substantial. We expect increased tourist arrivals, not just from abroad but also from within the country, as not everyone in Malaysia has visited Niah Caves.
"Being recognised globally would make it a special destination for us to witness this historical and heritage site," she said.
The announcement comes just days after the Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Deputy Minister Datuk Len Talif Salleh revealed that Niah National Park is currently in the final phase of selection. The final decision will be made in New Delhi, India, this coming July.
