Sarawak won't bow to pressure over English emphasis, says deputy minister

KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak will not bow to any pressure to reduce the use of English in the state, says a state deputy minister.

"We've been branded many things for our emphasis on English," Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said in a speech according to Borneo Post.

"Let them criticise us, but we understand its importance. Let them argue and become comfortable with their views," he said after closing the Sarawak English Language Education Symposium in Kuching.

"Here in Sarawak, we will never surrender to any form of pressure not to use English."

Annuar said the Sarawak government will continue to do what it believes is right for the people.

He said the state has invested significant resources to support English education, including embracing the Dual Language Programme (DLP).

"With DLP fully implemented up to Primary Six, the focus is now on enhancing students' proficiency through comprehensive programmes targetting the four essential language skills, listening, reading, writing and speaking," he said.

In his speech, Annuar also admitted his struggles with English and shared that his son, who studies in the United Kingdom, would often correct his mistakes.

Under the Federal Constitution, Sarawak has the option of using both Malay and English as official languages.
