KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya (UM) has issued an apology for the recent controversy involving a foreign professor.
In a statement today, the university expressed regret over the incident and announced immediate measures to address the situation.
It acknowledged the suggestion made by the Higher Education Ministry and had taken immediate action to cancel any programmes and activities scheduled to be attended by the invited foreign speaker.
The university said it would take full responsibility regarding the incident of the remarks made by the foreign speaker, Bruce Gilley, who accused Malaysia of advocating for a second Holocaust against the Jewish population.
"UM expresses regret over the controversial statements that have circulated on social media and have not respected the sentiments of the public.
"A comprehensive report regarding this issue is being prepared, and strict action will be taken against those found to be involved in this matter.
"To ensure that such incidents do not recur, UM is also enhancing procedures and implementing stricter guidelines, especially in background checks for any individuals or parties involved, including assessments of social media profiles' risk profiles," they said in a statement.
Additionally, UM has also condemned the irresponsible remarks made by the speaker recently regarding travel safety in Malaysia.
These are irresponsible and extreme statements that have angered the entire Malaysian populace, it said.
"UM will continue to support the government's stance against any elements associated with Israel and fully endorse efforts to recognise Palestine as a legitimate independent state," they added.
