KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will improve Internet facilities in Pulau Kapas and Pulau Gemia, Terengganu, to assist the islands' tourism operators.
In a statement, the MCMC said following a field visit and meeting with the Pulau Kapas and Pulau Gemia Tourism Traders Association, it was determined that there was a need to enhance the existing telecommunication services on the islands.
Tourism is one of the main economic sectors in Terengganu, playing a significant role in enhancing the socio-economic status of local communities.
Pulau Kapas and Pulau Gemia are among the popular tourist destinations in the state, attracting thousands of domestic and international visitors anually.
"At present, 4G broadband coverage by six service providers is available to visitors on Pulau Kapas, whereas coverage on Pulau Gemia is still low and under MCMC's observation for improvement measures.
"MCMC has also identified several locations to expand the radius of existing Internet coverage around the islands."
As such, it said, the improvements proposed for the islands included strengthening security aspects and emergency responses. They were expected to provide a better experience for tourists visiting Pulau Kapas and Pulau Gemia.
A good Internet connection would also greatly assist boat operators, resort owners and traders on Pulau Kapas and Pulau Gemia to sustain their daily income.
