Woman punched and robbed of RM947 during money exchange 'meeting'

KUALA LUMPUR: A woman lost US$200 (RM947) after she was robbed when exchanging money with two men at Jalan Memanda, Ampang near here, last Monday.

During the 9pm incident, the 39-year-old victim and her brother arranged a meeting with the suspects at the location with the intention of exchanging US$50,000 (RM236,950) because they were promised a high exchange rate.

Ampang Jaya district police chief assistant commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said during the incident, the victim only brought US$200 for fear of being a victim of robbery.

"The victim knew the suspects from a friend and during the meeting, the victim's fears came true.

"One of the suspects grabbed the bag and punched the victim before fleeing towards a waiting car.

"However, the suspect failed to escape when caught by members of the public who were at the scene and called the police," he said in a statement today.

The 32-year-old suspect was then handed over to Ampang Police Station patrol car officers.

"At about 12.40pm yesterday, a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Ampang Jaya district police arrested another suspect in Kepala Batas, Penang.

"The 65-year-old man is suspected of being involved in the case and the police also seized a mobile phone for investigation," he said.

Urine tests of both suspects were found to be negative for drugs.

"Checks found that the first suspect has no criminal record. However, the second suspect has four past criminal records.

"Police investigation found that the modus operandi was to rob the victim during the money exchange process where the victim was promised a small reward," he said.

Azam added that the first suspect was remanded for seven days from last Tuesday until May 13, while the second suspect was remanded for five days from today until Wednesday (May 15).

The case is being investigated according to Section 395 of the Penal Code, which is gang robbery.
