KUALA LUMPUR: The onset of the southwest monsoon is predicted to begin on May 17 and continue through September 2024.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said that this means most places across the country will experience more dry days than rainy days.
According to its director, Muhammad Helmi Abdullah, heavy rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms due to a phenomenon called 'squall line' can still occur.
It is expected along the west coast of the peninsula as well as in northern Sarawak and western Sabah, especially in the early morning.
A squall line is a line of thunderstorms formed due to wind convergence and can last for several hours.
During this period, open burning should be avoided to reduce the occurrence of haze, especially from July to September.
The public is also advised to use water wisely throughout this period.
