Hotter, drier days till September [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians can expect hotter and drier days until September because of the ongoing Southwest Monsoon, says the Malaysian Meteorological Department.

The department's director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah said many areas will experience less rainfall.

As such, open burning should be avoided to reduce the risk of haze, he told Kosmo!.

However, he said the squall line phenomenon could still see heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms on the west coast of the peninsula and Sabah, as well as the north of Sarawak.

Squall lines refer to a line of thunderstorms caused by a concentration of wind.

It was previously reported that the current hot and dry spell was caused by the combination of the effects of the Southwest Monsoon and two tropical cyclones in the South China Sea.

Yesterday the department issued a hot weather warning in eight areas in the peninsula

It said the maximum temperature in these areas is expected to reach between 35°C and 37°C for at least three consecutive days.
