SUNGAI PETANI: Quick action by firefighters saved a man who attempted suicide in Sungai Muda early yesterday.
Tikam Batu Fire and Rescue Station chief Muhamad Syukri Hashim said a team of rescuers was dispatched to the scene after being alerted to the incident at Km114.8 of the Plus Expressway about 12.18am.
"The team was informed that a man had attempted suicide by jumping from the bridge.
"The team scoured the river and spotted the man clinging to the bridge's pillar.
"The rescuers used special tools and rope to rescue the man and handed him over to medical responders for treatment."
Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Azharuddin Wan Ismail said an investigation revealed that prior to the incident, the 42-year-old man had a heated argument with his wife at home.
"Following the argument, the man, who works as a cook, left the house on his motorcycle.
"His friend tailed him, fearing that he would harm himself.
"The man then leaped off the bridge, despite his friend's frantic attempts to stop him."
Azharuddin said policemen from Tikam Batu police station rushed to the scene upon being alerted to the incident.
"The firefighters pulled the victim to safety, and he was taken to Kepala Batas Hospital.
"The man, who suffered light injuries to his arms and legs, is in stable condition," he said.
