Ulu Tiram shooting suspect lived in a closed-off commune

JOHOR BARU: The family of the shooting suspect at the Ulu Tiram police station, who was also alleged to be a Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) member, live in a closed-off commune.

Checks at the family's residence located on Jalan Rabani, Kampung Sungai Tiram, which is only seven kilometres from the police station, showed that the area is a private gated residence with a no-entry sign at the front.

It is estimated that there are more than 10 houses within the area.

Kampung Ulu Tiram village head Shazrul Idham Abd Aziz, 41, said the incident worries the nearby residents.

He hoped that the police would conduct a thorough investigation.

"This incident is particularly worrying for the residents, but I believe the police will take action and investigate to maintain the peace and harmony of the village," he said.

Meanwhile, a local resident, Fauzi Faizal, 39, said the suspect, who is understood to have four siblings, did not attend school and was educated by his father.

He said the settlement is believed to have existed for the past 20 years and it is estimated to have about 18 families. It is quite isolated and constantly monitored by authorities.

"It is believed that the siblings did not receive formal education and were taught by their father, possibly with extremist teachings. Residents are indeed worried with the suspect living here, but we trust the police to ensure this incident does not happen again," said Fauzi, who is also a member of the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) for the Tiram zone.

Earlier today, two policemen were killed, and another injured, after a masked intruder stormed the Ulu Tiram police station.

Johor police chief Commissioner M. Kumar confirmed the attack on the Ulu Tiram police station, at 3am today.

The attacker was shot dead at the scene.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Hussain said the suspect who stormed a police station in Ulu Tiram, killing two policemen and injuring another, is believed to have links to Jemaah Islamiyah (JI).

He said five members of the suspect's family have been arrested and JI material was found at the suspect's home.
