PM: Gig Workers Commission bill to be tabled in Parliament in July

KUALA LUMPUR: A bill to establish the Gig Workers Commission will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat in July, said the prime minister.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government decided to form the commission because of the huge number of young people in the gig economy.

"Recently, there was a proposal to establish the gig commission as hundreds of thousands of youths are involved in the gig economy.

"The government agreed (to the proposal) and we will prepare the necessary details for the law to be presented in Parliament in July," he said at the 2024 National Youth Day celebration at Dataran Pahlawan in Melaka.

This showed that the government listened to the voices of the youths, he said.

Human Resources Minister Steven Sim said last week the commission would provide a formal channel to address issues in the gig sector, such as grievances and wages.

He also said an interim report on the commission would be presented to the cabinet in June.

On Labour Day, Anwar said the commission should be swiftly formed to champion the interests of workers in the sector.

He had announced the commission at the Bumiputera Economic Congress in Putrajaya in March.
