Penang Pas to give grassroots chance to suggest potential candidates for Sungai Bakap by-election

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Pas has started discussions on the Sungai Bakap by-election following the death of its assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff last week.

State Pas commissioner Muhammad Fauzi Yusoff said the party would meet soon for further discussions before roping in their partners in Perikatan Nasional (PN).

He said the state seat was a Pas seat.

"All I can say is that a Penangite will be fielded to contest the state seat as no decision has been made yet.

"We are giving the grassroots a chance to suggest potential candidates to us.

"The discussion will also involve our partners in PN, namely Bersatu and Gerakan," he said at the sideline of the state legislative assembly sitting here today.

Last Friday, Pas' Sungai Bakap assemblyman Zamri, 56, died at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Hospital Seberang Jaya (HSJ). He was hospitalised about a month due to an inflammation of the stomach.

He was partially sedated to allow him to rest.

Zamri first contested under the party's banner for the Sungai Acheh state seat in the 2018 general elections but lost to then PKR's Zulkifli Ibrahim.

He again contested in the 2023 state elections for the Sungai Bakap state seat and won against PKR's Nurhidayah Che Rus with a 1,563 vote-majority.

Fauzi said the by-election would be held within 60 days after the Election Commission (EC) has been officially informed about the seat vacancy.
