Anwar applauds Google's RM9.4 billion investment in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, showed his appreciation towards Google's investment of RM9.4 billion in Malaysia through his Facebook post.

Anwar said, this positions Malaysia as one of the key players in the adoption and support services for digital technology-based services.

"During a virtual meeting with Google's senior management, I highlighted that besides supporting the general use of artificial intelligence (AI), strategic cooperation should focus on education, healthcare, and agriculture," he said.

"This is crucial to ensure Malaysia can leverage the latest technology skills and approaches," he said.

Anwar added that the investment involves the establishment of Google's first data centre in Malaysia and the development of the Google Cloud region.

This demonstrates the government's clear planning, alongside the country's economic strength and resources, is attracting both existing and new investors.

Today, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) has secured a commitment by Google to invest RM9.4 billion to house its first Google data centre and Google Cloud region in Malaysia.

This investment is expected to have a multiplier effect on the Malaysian economy of approximately RM15 billion and create around 26,500 jobs by the year 2030.
