Education Ministry leaves it to police to act on student heatstroke incident

KEPALA BATAS: The Education Ministry has conducted an inquiry into the case of the Year Five pupil, who became a person with disabilities (PwD), after suffering from a heatstroke.

The case is now being investigated by the police.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said she was leaving the matter to the authorities to take further action.

"For this case, we are leaving it to the authorities and the investigation is being conducted by the police.

"There is already a police report, and we will leave it to them to take further action.

"As for the Education Ministry level, we have carried out the investigation according to established protocols and procedures."

She said this when met at the Hari Keluarga Kelab Media Mutiara Pulau Pinang programme in conjunction with National Journalists' Day near Bertam here today.

Fadhlina, who is also Nibong Tebal member of Parliament, said the state education department had also conducted an investigation on the case based on standard operating procedures.

It was reported that a teacher allegedly forced a Year 5 pupil to stand in the sun for nearly three hours, causing the boy to suffer a heatstroke.

It is understood that the heat stroke left the pupil with a nerve condition. A lawyer for the pupil's family said a hospital had confirmed that the 11-year-old was now classified as a PwD.

Dinesh Muthal, representing the family, said they would proceed to the Social Welfare Department to finalise the application for PwD status.
