JOHOR BARU: Johor is witnessing a steady rise in Covid-19 cases, with numbers climbing consistently over the past eight weeks.
State Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said between June 3 and 9 (23rd epidemiological week), 263 new Covid-19 cases were recorded, which is a significant 5.6 per cent increase compared with the 249 cases recorded in the previous week.
Ling said the upward trend has been ongoing since the 16th epidemiological week (between April 15 and 21), which saw a significant surge with 109 cases reported.
The increase marked a 220.6 per cent increase compared with 34 cases recorded the week before.
He said Covid-19 cases has been on the rise since mid-April.
Statistics showed that between April 15 and 21 (16th epidemiological week), 109 cases were reported which was a huge spike from the previous week's 34 cases.
Between June 3 and 9 (23rd epidemiological week) there were 263 cases, a 5.6 per cent increase from the preceding week's 249 cases.
Ling said it's important to practise personal hygiene while face mask use is encouraged, especially for those feeling unwell or visiting crowded places.
"As the number of Covid-19 cases in Johor is expected to continue rising, it's crucial to remain vigilant.
Singapore is also experiencing an uptick in cases due to new sub-variants, which could impact us given our close proximity," he said.
Johor has a cumulative total of 414,401 Covid-19 cases to date.
However, Ling assured the public that the healthcare system in place is managing the situation effectively.
There are 14 Covid-19 patients hospitalised across the state, with none requiring intensive care.
