JOHOR BARU: A Johor executive councillor has refuted claims that the Kahang health clinic was closed when villagers brought an elephant attack victim for treatment.
State Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the clinic was opened and medical attention was given to the woman, Misirah Soliman, 75, who succumbed to her injuries.
Ling said the woman was unconscious when she was brought to the clinic by her family members at around 7am yesterday.
He said the victim did not display any vital signs and doctors attempted to resuscitate her.
However, their efforts were futile, and the victim was pronounced dead at 8.20am, Ling said.
He added reports that the clinic was closed were unfounded.
Ling said the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) has issued guidelines to plantation owners on measures to prevent elephants from trespassing.
"Perhilitan is monitoring the situation and will take necessary measures to prevent a repeat of such incidents," he said when contacted today.
He also conveyed his condolences to the victim's family.
Yesterday, it was reported that Misirah was killed after she was attacked by an elephant while tapping rubber.
