JOHOR BARU: The state Health Department has intensified enforcement following the implementation of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024, which came into effect on Oct 1.
This landmark legislation regulates smoking and vaping in public areas and curbs the sale of smoking products to minors.
Under the act, it is illegal for minors to buy tobacco products, smoking materials and tobacco substitutes, including vapes and electronic smoking devices. The act also bans the sale of these products to minors.
State Health and Unity Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said the state was fully committed to enforcing the new law and would not compromise on public health.
"The law has been in effect since Oct 1 and we are fully engaged in enforcement across the state.
"There will be no leniency for violators. Public health is our utmost priority, and this legislation is a significant step towards reducing smoking-related risks," he told the 'New Straits Times' today.
Ling added that coordinated efforts were underway, with state Health Department enforcement officers and municipal council authorities conducting checks and taking immediate action against businesses and individuals who break the law.
"Johor will continue to enforce the law without compromise. We urge everyone to follow the rules and cooperate with the authorities to ensure a healthier environment for all."
He also encouraged the public to report any violations to authorities and reminded businesses to ensure compliance or risk severe penalties.
