KUALA LUMPUR: The government is aiming to increase the use of safe nuclear technology by 40 per cent, with an industrial investment value of RM2.4 billion, by 2030.
The Science, Technology, and Innovation Ministry said the initiative aligned with the National Nuclear Technology Policy 2030, which its minister, Chang Lih Kang, launched on Sept 20 last year.
"To drive the development of nuclear technology in the country until 2030, the Malaysian Nuclear Agency, in collaboration with the Kedah State Museum Board, organised the Targeted Promotion Programme (Technology Preview and Showcase – TPS 2024) Series 2 from June 13 to 14 at the Kedah Paddy Museum in Alor Star," it said in a statement.
The programme was officially launched by Raja Muda of Kedah Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah Ibni Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin.
The ministry said TPS (Technology Preview and Showcase) served as a continuous platform for the Malaysian Nuclear Agency to promote the commercialisation of safe nuclear products, services and training to the public and industry.
"This programme aims to enhance the adoption of nuclear technology in potential sectors and increase students' interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
"Through this programme, research and development outcomes from Malaysian Nuclear Agency researchers are showcased across various fields, such as agro-agriculture, radiation processing technology, industrial applications, environmental management, medical applications, health and radiation safety, nuclear engineering and training."
Last year, Chang said the the National Nuclear Technology Policy 2030 would enable the country to optimise the peaceful use of nuclear technology for the country's socio-economic development.
He said the policy outlined four strategic core areas, 18 strategies and 13 primary targets to achieve the vision and direction of the country's nuclear technology ecosystem.
Six focus areas that can be enhanced through the use of nuclear technology were also identified, involving medicine and healthcare; food and agriculture; device and equipment manufacturing; environmental and natural resource management; industrial applications; and, nuclear safety and security.
