BALING: The Kedah Forestry Department has taken swift action to temporarily close the Lata Bayu Recreational Forest Park in Asam Jawa starting yesterday, following the detection of a leptospirosis outbreak.
Leptospirosis is an infectious illness caused by the Leptospira bacteria. It is a zoonotic disease, which means it is transmitted between animals and humans.
Its director Muhammad Abdullah announced the closure after two visitors required intensive care treatment due to contracting leptospirosis following their visit to the park.
"The entrance gate has been sealed, and warning tapes have been placed to prevent unauthorised access. The park will remain closed until the situation improves and is deemed safe by the district health office," he said.
He also expressed concern that despite warnings and closure notices, some individuals removed the warning banner, potentially exposing others to the health risk.
"In response to the outbreak, the Baling District Health Department has initiated monitoring and health education efforts at the site," he added.
Meanwhile, Baling district officer Yazlan Sunardie Che Yahaya said the closure was necessary to conduct further investigation and implement preventive measures.
"To safeguard public health, Lata Bayu will undergo thorough investigation and preventive actions," he said.
Visitors who recently visited Lata Bayu and are experiencing symptoms such as fever, body aches, headaches, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, jaundice, or red eyes are urged to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest clinic or hospital.
