KUALA LUMPUR: A fisherman was rescued while another remains missing after their boat capsized near Pantai Acheh in Pulau Indah yesterday.

Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director, Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the incident occurred when the two fishermen set out to sea in a fibreglass boat at 8.00 am.

They were not wearing life jackets.

Strong waves caused by bad weather led to the boat capsizing some 1.8 nautical miles from Pantai Acheh.

Arnizam Ibrahim, 43, managed to cling to the overturned boat and was later rescued.

His cousin, Mohd Fazil Paijan, 36, is still missing.

In a statement, Muhaimin said MMEA launched a search and rescue mission at 5 pm yesterday after being alerted to the incident.

However, the operation was postponed at 7.30 pm due to bad weather conditions and darkness.

Muhaimin said a forward base has been set up to enhance the coordination of the search.

The search for Fazil, resumed at 7 am today with the help of a police AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter.

Teams from the Marine Police, Fire and Rescue Department, and the Malaysia Civil Defence Force are also involved in the search and rescue operation which covers an area of 102 square nautical miles.
