Ramlan Harun is the new EC chairman [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun has been appointed as the new Election Commission (EC) chairman effective Wednesday, said Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali.

In a statement, the Chief Secretary to the Government said Ramlan's appointment as EC chairman had received the consent of His Majesty Sultan of Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.

Ramlan's appointment was in line with Article 114(1) of the Federal Constitution.

The former Rural and Regional Development Ministry secretary-general replaces Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh who retired on May 9.

Ghani had led the EC for four years.

Ramlan, 60, had been in the public service for 28 years, serving several ministries and departments.

He holds a master's degree in land resource management from Universiti Putra Malaysia, and a bachelor's degree in housing and building planning from Universiti Sains Malaysia.

He also has a diploma in public administration from the National Institute of Public Administration.
