KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia must exercise caution in its bilateral relations, given the fluid geopolitical situation, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said while maintaining positive relations is crucial, every prime minister's visit must be meticulously planned.
"We received many invitations for the prime minister's official visit, however, we cannot simply accept it, given the complexities of global politics.
"We need to be cautious in positioning our country because visits by the prime minister or the foreign minister are considered as acknowledgments of Malaysia's standing in global diplomacy, hence each invitation warrants scrutiny.
"The ministry's advice to the prime minister is to scrutinise each invitation because we do not want to get entangled in the intricate global political landscape, which could potentially strain relationships with other nations.
"So far, we have a good relationship with Russia, China and other countries," he said in response to a supplementary question from Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (PN-Machang).
Wan Fayhsal asked if Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would visit Moscow in Russia, as it was learned that many invitations were extended for him to do so.
Mohamad said the ministry aimed to position Malaysia as the middle state.
"We strive not to be perceived as leaning towards anybody. Malaysia, as a trading nation, prioritises trading economy, hence we must be friends with all.
"This approach reflects Malaysia's current foreign policy, which not only emphasises traditional diplomacy but also economic diplomacy."
