BEIJING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed hope for positive outcomes following Donald Trump's victory in the United States presidential election.
Anwar said these outcomes should encompass not only bilateral relations and trade but also global geopolitics.
"We would welcome it if America adopts a positive stance towards peace, aiming to halt the brutal attacks on Gaza and to recognise the legitimate and absolute rights of the Palestinian people.
"At the same time, we hope it will also seek methods of reconciliation in the Ukraine conflict, as this would aid in resolving economic issues," he said during a press conference with Malaysian media at the end of his working visit to China today.
Present at the press conference were Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan; Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz; and Human Resources Minister Steven Sim.
Anwar yesterday congratulated Trump, who claimed victory in the United States presidential election.
He added that Trump's comeback brings renewed opportunities and that Malaysia is ready to move forward with optimism, collaboration and shared purpose.
Anwar added that Malaysia, as Asean Chair in 2025, hopes the US will reinvigorate its engagement with Southeast Asia.
He also expressed hope that the US would use its considerable influence to help end the devastating violence and loss of life in Palestine and Ukraine.
