Search for missing soldier intensifies

KUALA LUMPUR: The search for a soldier who went missing during Op Ukur in Limbang Sarawak, has been intensified.

The army said in a statement the search for Private Muhammad Syafiq Hilmi Abd Halim was carried out with the help of an EC725 helicopter from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) and an Augusta AW109 Light Observation Helicopter from the army.

The K9 dog unit from the police was also deployed.

"The search and rescue (SAR) operation has entered its 10th day, and continues today with both air and ground methods around the Ulu Mendalam area in Limbang."

The army said the search was also supported by members of the RMAF Combat Air Rescue Team, General Operations Force and Survey and Mapping Department (Jupem).

"Meanwhile, in the Brunei sector, the Royal Brunei Armed Forces are conducting searches within their area."

The army said they remained committed in the operation to find Syafiq and hoped the public would pray for the safe return of the soldier.

Syafiq, from the 7th Battalion Border Regiment stationed at Kem Kidurong, Bintulu, was reported missing on June 18 while serving as a security escort for the Jupem team.

Op Ukur is an operation conducted under the command of the 31st Border Brigade Headquarters, involving the deployment of army personnel as security escorts for the Jupem team carrying out the marking and measurement of the Malaysia-Brunei border in the survey area from Ulu Tutong (E500) to Bebuloh (E600), Limbang, from June 11 June to Sept 2.
