SUNGAI PETANI: A worker at a rubber glove production factory fainted, while 16 others complained of eye irritation and nausea following a chemical spill at the premises in Bakar Arang near here yesterday.

A Kedah Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said a team was deployed to the scene after the department received a call from the factory over a sodium hypochlorite spill at 3.04pm.

"Upon arrival, the team found that 17 victims were affected by the incident, with one reported to have fainted and 16 others experiencing eye irritation and nausea.

"Those affected by the chemical spill comprised 15 women and two men, believed to be workers at the factory.

"The victim who fainted was rushed to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for treatment. Six of the 16 victims suffering from eye irritation and dizziness were also sent to the same hospital," the spokesperson said in a statement.

Three other victims, who only suffered eye irritation, were sent to the nearest clinics by the factory management.

About two hours later, seven other victims affected by the incident were sent to the hospital by the Health Ministry for follow-up checks since they complained of eye irritation and nausea.

"A hazardous materials (Hazmat) team from Kulim Hi-Tech Fire and Rescue Station was informed of the incident.
