Fuziah Salleh debunks sugar price hike rumours amid election buzz

NIBONG TEBAL: Deputy Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Fuziah Salleh said there had been no decision yet regarding the proposed increase in sugar prices, which became a topic of discussion during the ongoing Sungai Bakap by-election.

She emphasised that despite requests from Malaysia's main sugar producers, MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd (MSM) and Central Sugars Refinery Sdn Bhd (CSR), to raise prices due to financial losses amounting to 88 sen per kg of sugar produced, no decision had been made by the Cabinet.

"Until now, there has been no decision by the Cabinet on the increase in sugar prices," she told newsmen here today.

"We have provided monthly incentives totaling RM42 million to these companies to stabilise sugar supply and prevent them from halting production due to significant losses," she explained, highlighting ongoing uncertainties about the continuation of these incentives.

Fuziah said that discussions and considerations regarding the potential price hike had persisted since April, underscoring the government's commitment to sustain sugar production amid economic challenges faced by the industry.

She was met at the MySubsidi Diesel 2.0 open day with Penang KPDN at Dewan MPKK Lima Kongsi here.
