2,000 residents in Tamparuli, Kiulu cut off due to landslides

TAMPARULI: More than 2,000 people here were cut off when 12 village roads in the district and Kiulu were rendered impassable due to landslides and fallen trees caused by heavy rain since yesterday afternoon.

The affected routes included Jalan Tamparuli-Kiulu, Jalan Bantayan-Damat-Sawah, Jalan Kiulu-Longkou Lama, Jalan Kampung Bongoliu and Jalan Tamparuli-Togop, Jalan Bungoliu Longkou-Timbok, Jalan Bungoliu Longkou-Timbok Glob, Jalan Kiulu Lawamandau and Jalan Kiwoi-Lingga Bambangan, which could not be accessed by all types of vehicles.

The Public Works Department said in a statement that work to clear the roads affected by landslides and fallen trees is underway.

Tuaran member of parliament Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau said that all the affected routes are expected to be usable again once the cleaning work is completed.

Madius, who was supposed to return to Kuala Lumpur to attend the parliament session, had to cancel his trip.

"I decided to postpone my flight to Kuala Lumpur this morning, simply because I wanted to be in the Tuaran area that was affected by the floods.

"For me the people and the situation in the Tuaran area are more important," he said when visiting the flood affected areas in Tuaran, Tamparuli and Kiulu today.

He also sought the assistance of the Tuaran Parliament People's Service Centre to monitor all areas affected by floods, landslides and fallen trees.
