Number of people with nausea after KLIA engineering area gas leak increases to 39

SEPANG: A total of 39 people suffered nausea following the methyl mercaptan gas leak at the KLIA Southern Support Zone Aircraft Engineering area this morning.

According to Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail, 24 of the victims have been discharged from hospital.

Another 14 victims are receiving treatment at the KLIA air disaster unit.

"Another victim is still receiving treatment at the Putrajaya Hospital.

"At around 5pm, the hazardous material unit team (Hazmat) personnel managed to trace the leak to a tank that was not being used," he said adding that work is being carried out to patch the leak.

He said the immediate area was evacuated as soon as the leak was reported.

"A private company was called in to patch the tank before it will be dismantled and disposed," said Wan Md Razali.

It was earlier reported that at least 20 people suffered from nausea following a chemical leak at the KLIA Southern Support Zone Aircraft Engineering area.

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations centre had earlier confirmed that methyl mercaptan gas had leaked from the KLIA Southern Support Zone Aircraft Engineering area in the incident this morning.

However, Wan Md Razali assured the public that the incident did not affect operations at the KLIA terminal.

Methyl mercaptan, or Methanethiol is a flammable and colourless gas with an unpleasant odour akin to rotten cabbage, according to the United States Centre for Disease Control (CDC) website.

It is used as a gas odorant, as well as an intermediate in the production of pesticides, jet fuels, and plastics.
