Fahmi says his predecessors caused delay in country's broadband network project

KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the failure to complete the first phase of the Point of Presence (PoP) project, which is related to Malaysia's broadband infrastructure, was due to his predecessors.

He said the project was originally scheduled for completion at the end of 2022, which was before his tenure as minister.

"The ministers at the time failed to see it through. We have worked hard to finish it, and we are almost done.

"We have only three sites left unfinished out of 600 sites that were targeted for PoP infrastructure setup," Fahmi told reporters today.

He had earlier witnessed a memorandum of understanding between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) to enhance 5G access and infrastructure to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMSE)

The Auditor General's Report 2/2024 revealed that 28 out of 87 broadband segments, worth RM53.6 million, have remained unused since the completion of the Broadband Infrastructure and Connectivity Empowerment Programme from 2013 to 2017.

Fahmi said the failure to complete the PoP happened before he and ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi bin Md Isa were in the ministry.
