CHUKAI: A sun bear was killed when it was hit by two cars at KM299, East Coast Expressway Two (LPT2), heading towards Kuantan near the Kijal rest and recreational area last night.
Kemaman police chief Superintendent Hanyan Ramlan said the bear was hit by a Honda Civic and a Toyota Alphard at around 8.10pm as it was trying to cross the road.
He said the bear, estimated to weigh about 90kg, suddenly dashed across the road before being struck by one of the vehicles.
"After being hit, the bear is said to have attempted to get up before being hit by another vehicle moving on the right lane.
"The bear died at the scene before its carcass was taken by officers from the Wildlife and National Parks Department for further action," he said.
Hanyan said the bear suffered injuries to its head and body.
During the incident, Hanyan said, the bear was believed to be crossing the road to enter the nearby forest.
"We advise the public to be cautious when passing through the area, especially at night, to avoid similar incidents," he said.
