JELI: The Kelantan Wildlife and National Parks Department captured a male sun bear in Kampung Sungai Satan here today.
This was the second capture made by the department in the area. The first was on July 12 where the department captured a female sun bear.
Department director Mohamad Hafid Rohani said the latest male sun bear was captured after it entered a trap set up by its rangers.
"The trap was set up in the area on July 14.
"The male sun bear was believed to be from the Sungai Sator forest reserve which is located about six kilometres from the vilage," he said in a statement.
He hoped that the villagers feel relieved after the capture of the two bears.
"We hope we can prevent continuous losses suffered by the villagers due to crop and property damage," he added.
He said the first female sun bear was recently relocated to its habitat while the latest would be released soon.
He added to reduce conflicts involving bears, villagers especially orchard owners, are advised to take mitigation measures such as always having company when going to the orchard.
"If possible, do not enter the orchard area at night. They must clean the orchards regularly and install lights around the house at night.
"Members of the public are advised to be more cautious if they encounter wildlife and not to take their own actions that could pose a safety risk to themselves," he said.
