NIBONG TEBAL: With only 24 per cent of voters' turnout as of 11am, the Election Commission (EC) has urged voters to come out to vote.
EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the voters' turnout was low compared with the last state elections.
"As such, I hope the voters will come out to fulfil their responsibilities. I hope they can come out fast to vote as we cannot predict the weather in the afternoon
"For now, the voters' turnout looks to be balanced among the old and the young. Many young people come out in the morning to vote," he said when met at the SK Sungai Duri polling centre here.
He was here to monitor the running of the by-election.
Besides SK Sungai Duri, he also visited SMK Bandar Tasek Mutiara and SJK(C) Boon Beng.
The three polling stations have the highest number of polling streams.
Meanwhile, Ramlan said the overall voting process was smooth with minor hiccups.
"We did not receive any report of any major or serious offences throughout the voting process," he added.
Altogether, there are a total of
39,279 registered voters in Sungai Bakap, including 57 police personnel.
The by-election is triggered following the death of Pas man Nor Zamri Latiff on May 24.
The Sungai Bakap by-election sees a straight fight between Pakatan Harapan's Dr Joohari Ariffin and Perikatan Nasional's Abidin Ismail.
In the state elections last August, Nor Zamri defeated PKR's Nurhidayah Che Rose with a majority of 1,563 votes.
