Boy who ate snacks laced with rat poison laid to rest

BALING: Three-year-old Muhammad Akil Syauqi, who died after eating snacks laced with rat poison, was buried at the Kampung Banggol Berangan Islamic Cemetery here today.

Earlier, his body was brought from Penang General Hospital to his grandmother's house here.

His body was then taken to Surau Lebai Ahmad, Kampung Banggol Berangan at 8.40pm for funeral prayers.

He was later buried at the cemetery at 9.45pm.

Also present were his mother, Nurain Hasnorizal, 25, family members, and about 300 people.

Akil's grandfather, Hasnorizal Ab Wahab, 46, expressed gratitude that the burial was completed smoothly and accepted what had happened.

However, his mother declined to be interviewed.

According to earlier reports, the two brothers, aged two and three, were in critical condition after consuming crackers containing rat poison that were hung on a wire fence in their neighbor's orchard at Kampung Padang Ubi, Labu Besar, on Sunday.

They reportedly brought home two packs of the snacks after accompanying their grandfather to look after their cattle.

Akil and his brother, Muhammad Luth Syauqi, 2, were believed to have vomited and convulsed, prompting their mother to rush them to Malau Health Clinic with the help of a neighbour.

The brothers were later transferred to Kulim Hospital before being moved to Penang General Hospital due to their critical condition.

However, Akil was pronounced dead at 8.40am today while his brother remains in critical condition.
