Tragic 2-vehicle collision: Pregnant woman among 3 fatalities

KUALA NERUS: A pregnant woman was among three people killed in a tragic collision on Jalan Mengabang Lekor, Batu Rakit, last night.

The accident, which occurred at 9.15pm, involved a Proton Wira and a Nissan Navara 4WD.

The deceased included passengers in the Nissan Navara, Zaini Ambak, 46, from Kampung Rahmat, Chalok, Bandar Permaisuri, Setiu; as well as the driver and passenger of the Proton Wira, Muhammad Iqwan Ahmad Izeham, 23, and Nur Mimi Aliya Mohd Shukri, 18, from Kampung Kuala Abang, Dungun.

Kuala Terengganu police chief, Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor, said that Muhammad Iqwan, who was driving the Proton Wira, succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ).

"The incident occurred when the Proton Wira was travelling from Setiu towards Kuala Terengganu city, while the Nissan Navara was returning home to Kampung Rahmat from the Kampung Pak Tuyu night market," he said.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the Proton Wira lost control upon reaching the accident site, veering into the opposite lane and colliding with the Nissan Navara.

"The impact caused severe damage to both vehicles, resulting in the deaths of the passengers at the scene. The critically injured Proton Wira driver later died in the hospital.

"The Nissan Navara driver, Rasdi Yaakob, 58, who is Zaini's husband, was also injured and is currently receiving treatment at HSNZ Kuala Terengganu."

"Heavy rain and slippery road conditions were factors at the time of the incident," he added.

Azli said that all the bodies were sent to the Forensic Unit of HSNZ for further action, and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
