Labuan Corporation clarifies chairman's role amidst allegations

KUALA LUMPUR: Labuan Corporation has refuted claims of its chairman Tan Sri Anifah Aman's lack of presence and being unavailable for local matters.

Its deputy chairman, Simsudin Sidek, said members of parliament and senators are elected to manage local issues directly and are bound by their political parties, in contrast to senators who advocate for their regions at the federal level.

"As a senator, Tan Sri Anifah Aman's primary responsibility is to bring Labuan's issues to the Senate, ensuring they receive the attention and resources required for sustainable development," he said in a statement.

Simsudin said this following allegations made by Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii regarding Anifah's role and responsibilities.

He said Wong's comments confused the distinct responsibilities of an MP with those of a senator.

Previously, it was reported that Wong had called on Anifah to decide whether he wants to serve his full two-year term as the chairman.

"Anifah is seldom seen here and his hands are likely full with other commitments in Sabah.

"Many have complained about his lack of engagement with the local community. Even I found it not easy to meet him on local issues," he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Simsudin said Anifah's position as chairman involves seeking investors and forging international collaborations to benefit Labuan.

"Attracting high-level investors requires strategic engagement, often necessitating extensive travel and high-level negotiations," he said, citing Anifah's efforts in China, Kazakhstan, Europe and the Middle East as examples of his commitment.

"Contrary to Datuk Wong's assertions, Tan Sri Anifah Aman has never concealed his whereabouts and has always been transparent about his commitments.

"He has been instrumental in securing federal funding for infrastructure projects in Labuan and consistently attends Board meetings and participates in critical decision-making processes."

Simsudin said this included advocating for better infrastructure during Dewan Negara sessions and beyond.
