Unemployed trio arrested for suspected cable theft in Labuan

LABUAN: Three unemployed men were arrested yesterday on suspicion of stealing cables belonging to Telekom Malaysia Berhad in Kampung Bukit Kalam and Kampung Rancha-Rancha.

The three local men, aged between 35 and 42, were detained by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Labuan District Police Headquarters (IPD) through Ops Lusuh.

Labuan Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd Hamizi Halim, said they received reports of missing and damaged cables in the two areas at 4.30pm last Wednesday.

He added that the incident resulted in losses amounting to RM28,000.

"Following the investigation, police arrested three men suspected of being involved in the cable theft case.

"Police also seized a vehicle and several tools suspected of being used to cut the cables," he said in a media statement today.

Mohd Hamizi said the arrests of the three suspects resolved two reported cases.

"Two of the three detained suspects tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

"Further checks revealed that two suspects have previous criminal records related to theft, fraud, and drugs," he added.

The case is being investigated under Section 431A of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of two years imprisonment, a fine, or both.
