Reading of four bills postponed to next Dewan Rakyat meeting

KUALA LUMPUR: The second and third readings of four bills listed in the Dewan Rakyat's Order of Business have been postponed to the next meeting, announced Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), M. Kulasegaran.

The bills are the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024, the Mufti (Federal Territories) Bill 2024, the Administration of Islamic Law (Federal Territories) (Amendment) Bill 2024, and the Syariah Court Civil Procedure (Federal Territories) (Amendment) Bill 2024.

"The bills listed as items four to seven in today's Order of Business have had their second and third readings postponed to the next meeting," he said.

The first reading of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024 was presented in the Dewan Rakyat on March 25 by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. One of the bill's aims is to lower the citizenship application age requirement from 21 to 18 years.

This aligns the age requirement with the voting age in Malaysia, the definition of children provided in the Child Act 2001 (Act 611), and the age of majority under the Age of Majority Act 1971 (Act 211).

The first readings for the three bills related to Islamic affairs were presented at the current meeting by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.

The Parliament calendar schedules the next Dewan Rakyat meeting from Oct 14 to Dec 12. --BERNAMA
