Sun bear, wild elephant that destroyed crops captured

KUALA KRAI: A sun bear and a wild elephant that destroyed villagers' crops were captured here yesterday.

Kelantan Wildlife and National Parks Department director Mohamad Hafid Rohani said the department captured the sun bear in Kampung Sungai Pas and the wild elephant at Kampung Gua Ikan.

He added the sun bear was believed to have destroyed plants and vegetable belonging to Sungai Pas villagers.

"The department received a report about the sun bear on Aug 27 and set up a trap.

"The sun bear entered the trap about 5.30pm yesterday."

Hafid said the sun bear, believed to be from a forest reserve near Sungai Rek, was relocated to Terengganu Nasional Park yesterday.

On the same day, he said, department rangers captured an elephant believed to have destroyed crops in Kampung Gua Ikan.

The male elephant, he said, was captured near the village about 11am.

He said the elephant would be relocated soon.
