KUALA LUMPUR: It was a historic day today with the installation of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim as the nation's 17th King.

The ceremony, steeped in Malay royal customs and tradition at Istana Negara, marked a momentous event for the nation.

In his royal address, Sultan Ibrahim pledged to discharge his duties faithfully, honestly, and fairly, with full consideration for all segments of society.

"First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to my brother rulers who have placed their trust in me and given me the honour to take over the duties as the head of state.

"Insya-Allah, I will discharge my duties faithfully and honestly and rule fairly, with full consideration for all segments of society, to safeguard the well-being and sovereignty of the country," the King said.

Earlier during the ceremony, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as a pillar of strength for the country and its diverse population, ensuring equality and justice for all Malaysians in line with the principles of constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy.

He said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's role as the head of Islam, the federal religion, is to strengthen the position of the Malay language and defend the rights and privileges of the Malays and Bumiputera.

"Indeed, the installation of His Majesty today marks a historical event that, God willing, will raise the dignity of the country.

"The government and people pray to Allah SWT that Their Majesties and family will always be blessed by His grace and guidance, remain steadfast on the throne, and always in good health."

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Malay rulers, Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, King of Bahrain, Sheikh Hamad Isa Al Khalifa, and Senior Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong.

Also in attendance were Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
