Schools must comply with guidelines when organising programmes, accepting contributions

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry is investigating a recent report that a school had organised a charity programme that involved contributions from a liquor company.

The ministry, in a statement today said it viewed the matter seriously and further investigation is being carried out.

"Administrators at educational institutions under the ministry are reminded to comply with existing guidelines related to organising of programmes and acceptance of donations.

"The ministry welcomes the efforts of schools in organising charity programmes to obtain funds for development purposes in line with the Community Owned School initiative.

"But this must comply with regulations, which prohibit donations involving the proceeds from gambling activities, cigarettes, drugs, alcohol that can affect the development of a student's intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical potential.

"The ministry is always proactive in dealing with social problems in the younger generation. Various awareness and prevention programmes are organised in schools to provide guidance to students," read the statement.
