[UPDATED] Fahmi: Education Ministry to clarify liquor sponsorships for schools

PUTRAJAYA: The cabinet discussed the issue of a liquor company making a donation to a school at today's meeting.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the matter will be clarified by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

"It was discussed in the meeting today and it has been decided that the Education Ministry will answer the matter," he said, without providing details on when the minister would make any announcement.

Fahmi also asked the media to get in touch with the relevant ministry when asked about how the cabinet's decision on the matter will affect Chinese schools in future.

"I will leave it to the ministry, please reach out to them," he said.

Yesterday, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said he would bring the issue of donations and sponsorships by a liquor company to schools to the cabinet tomorrow.

Loke, who is also DAP secretary-general, said the donations to Chinese primary schools should not be an issue as they had been giving funds for decades.

He also said such donations given were never an issue and have been organised for the past 30 years.

This comes after Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu had received a mock cheque for RM3 million bearing a liquor company's logo at a fundraising event for SJK(C) Tche Min in Sungai Pelek, Selangor.

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry had said it viewed the matter seriously and is investigating the matter further.

Its minister Fadhlina then reminded all school management boards to comply with the guidelines when accepting any donations.

She said while the ministry is open to all forms of contributions and crowdfunding, schools must follow guidelines for organising events and accepting donations.
