Malaysia to reach out to other countries for joint action over ICJ's ruling on Israel

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will reach out to several countries, including Indonesia and Brunei, to take joint action on the recent International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling which declared Israel's continued presence in Palestinian territories illegal.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the joint action would be taken through international forums, including the United Nations (UN), UN Security Council and UN Human Rights Council.

"Following the ruling, Malaysia will call several countries such as Indonesia and Brunei, as well as similar-minded countries including the Gulf Cooperation Council and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation countries to take joint action through international forums.

"The Cabinet welcomes the ICJ ruling which declared Israel's occupation of Palestinian land is illegal and that several actions must be taken, including vacating illegal settlements and compensating all destruction that has occurred."

On Friday, ICJ, which is the UN's top court ruled that Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian territories was illegal and needed to end as soon as possible.

He added that Israel was "under an obligation to immediately cease all new settlement activities and to evacuate all settlers" from occupied land.

Meanwhile, Fahmi said the Cabinet also welcomes the Beijing Declaration between Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas.

"The Cabinet also expresses its appreciation to the Chinese government for its efforts to meet with the 14 factions and hope that this unification will open a new chapter for Palestine."

It was reported that an agreement by 14 Palestinian factions to set up an interim national reconciliation government to govern Gaza after the war had been signed.
