PUTRAJAYA: The rise of coffee shop culture has breathed new life into the coffee shop industry, which grew by 4.1 per cent, with 5,021 establishments reported in 2022.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin today said Kuala Lumpur led in output value for the coffee shop sector, contributing RM1.6 billion, while Selangor followed with RM1.0 billion.
"This industry's output value is RM4.2 billion, with an average annual growth rate of 4.1 per cent. Value-added also increased by 5.5 per cent, reaching RM1.9 billion.
"However, in terms of the number of establishments, Selangor still records the highest number, with 1,311 establishments," he said at the launch of the 2023 Economic Census here.
Unique and trendy coffee shops attracted local and international customers, he said.
Specialty cafes could become attractions in their own right, contributing to the nation's industry, he added.
Uzir said this demonstrated the crucial role consumer preferences played in Malaysia's economic growth.
He said industries – such as durian cultivation, bird's nest collection, beekeeping, and honey and wax production – had also reached new levels, fuelled by rising global demand for local agricultural products.
He added that the homestay industry had become an increasingly popular alternative for accommodation, experiencing a 79.3 per cent growth over the past seven years.
