PUTRAJAYA: The cabinet has decided that government events will from today reduce the sugar content in drinks by 50 per cent.
Unity government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said this measure was intended to promote a healthier lifestyle.
Fahmi said this decision followed the 2023 National Morbidity Survey, which reported an increase in diabetes among Malaysians, with about 15.5 per cent of the population affected.
"This means that diabetes, a non-communicable disease, is a significant issue that needs to be addressed comprehensively.
"As one of the government's initiatives starting today, the cabinet has decided that government events, including meetings, will reduce sugar in drinks by 50 per cent, and all beverages will be served without added sugar," he said here.
On April 24, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni said nearly five million Malaysians were at risk of pre-diabetes or diabetes.
He said diabetes often had no symptoms, with many people being unaware of their condition and potentially missing early screenings.
