TUMPAT: A smuggler's attempt to sneak 13,000kg of sugar into Thailand was thwarted when General Operations Force (GOF) personnel arrested him.
The sugar, worth an estimated RM40,000 has been seized.
The suspect, 26, was driving a lorry bound for the Thai border when he was stopped by GOF personnel as he passed Kampung Kulim in Wakaf Baru.
GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Abd Hamid said an inspection of the lorry found the subsidised sugar.
Nik Ros said the sugar was likely headed for an illegal jetty near the border.
Separately, two men were arrested with 300 boxes of 1kg cooking oil polybags worth RM12,700.
Nik Ros said the duo were travelling in a lorry when they were stopped by GOF personnel.
"The cooking oil is believed to be meant for the Thai market. We suspected the two were hired to send the cooking oil to Thai suppliers," he added.
