KUALA LUMPUR: The Palestine solidarity rally which will be held on Sunday night is meant to send Malaysia's strong and clear signal condemning the murder of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government has continued to present a clear stance in condemning Israel's 'insanity' towards Palestinians and the murder of Haniyeh.
"The Foreign Minister (Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan) issued a statement earlier during the Upper House session (on the government's stance).
"We have also discussed the matter in the Cabinet meeting and the Cabinet has deliberately condemned the continued atrocities, the killings and the insanity committed by the Israel regime towards Haniyeh.
"We will also have a gathering to support the Palestinian cause on Sunday (night) and I believe this will deliver a clear message (that Malaysia will continue to support the Palestinian cause)," he said when met by reporters after the Warriors Day prayers in Masjid Negara, today.
Present were Minister in Prime Minister (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay and the Grand Imam of Masjid Negara Ehsan Mohd Hosni.
Yesterday, the Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed the death of Haniyeh, head of the Hamas group, stressing that an investigation is underway.
In a statement, the ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani expressed condolences over "the martyrdom of Ismail Haniyeh to the proud nation of Palestine".
Haniyeh, normally based in Qatar, had been the face of Hamas since the war began on Oct 7, last year.
He travelled between Turkey and Doha to act as a negotiator in ceasefire talks.
Earlier today, unity government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said the rally would take place at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil at 8pm.
Fahmi, who is also Communications Minister, said the rally would be attended by Anwar, Cabinet members and other leaders.
