PUCHONG: Nor Hafiza Samaldin is not your ordinary car service advisor.
When there is a need to, the petite 25-year-old rolls up her sleeves, and fixes her customer's car herself.
Hafiza does it not because it is her job. It's because she is also a "motorhead", having developed an interest in repairing cars as a teenager.
Her parents' encouragement helped too.
"At the age of 19, I started learning from my father's friend (a mechanic) who could not believe that I wanted to learn how to repair cars.
Hafiza said she had to convince her father's friend to teach her.
"No one in my family works as a mechanic, and I really enjoy repair work. So I thought, why not just learn instead of sending the car to the workshop?"
After she learned some basics from her father's friend over a year, she chose to further her studies in the field.
Now, she holds a Diploma in Automotive Technology from the Advanced Technology Training Centre. She was the only female student in her class.
"I admit you need a lot of physical strength in this field because items and spare parts like engines and gearboxes are heavy, but to me, it's about challenging myself."
Hafiza's current job at a service centre in Puchong mostly revolves around explaining repairs to customers but when an extra mechanic is needed, Hafiza is more than ready to get her hands dirty.
