AI helps yearning hearts

KUALA LUMPUR: A 25-year-old woman's creativity with the help of artificial intelligence technology helped to `reunite' her with family members who have passed on.

The AI application she used brought back the deceased family members via photos and videos, making it look almost real.

Dayang Azieyanie Hafiza Datu Azmie made the most out of AI recently when she it to combine self-portraits with loved ones like her mother, father and grandfather to produce a video as if they were hugging each other in the real world.

"Although AI can cause a lot of harm when misused, the technology can also cure one's longing for their loved one who are no more. I combined a photo of me and my late grandfather who passed away on in May 2014 using Al's video generator because I really miss him and it worked," she was quoted in Kosmo! today.

In the article, Dayang Azieyanie said she had to keep trying a few times to generate the video before succeeding.

She posted the video she made on her TikTok account.

The AI-generated video , which showed her hugging her long departed loved ones, has been viewed almost a million times.

"The application allows me to fulfil my yearning to see and be with him, since I've never hugged him before.

"When the hugging video was generated, I couldn't help but cry and was grateful that such technology was available today, even if it was just a video," she said.

She added that she has also been receiving numerous requests from fellow TikToker users who want her to help produce similar videos involving their respective family members and close friends who had died.

She said she is forced to charge a RM 5 per video fee because the AI application she uses has a subscription fee and limitation.

Meanwhile, Noraliza Kamaruzzaman, 29, said she too benefitted from the AI application when she generated a photo of her with her late mother who passed away four years ago.

She said she misses her mother very much and was unable to take care of her in her last days because she was away studying in Sarawak at the time.

"I feel very sad and miss that I could not even give her a hug before she died. When I came across this application, I immediately used it to generate a video of us both.

"I was very sad when I saw the final video produced using the AI application. But nonetheless I'm thankful for the memory that I have now of us hugging each other.

Another person interviewed by the Malay daily, Azhar Idris Zainal, said he used the AI application to super impose an image of his father who is separated from the family, in his wedding photo.
