43 suspected GROs arrested in Immigration raids in Ipoh

IPOH: Forty-three women, believed to be offering services of guest relations officers, were among 53 illegal immigrants arrested when the Immigration Department raided two entertainment premises here this morning.

During the raid, some of the illegal immigrants resorted to hiding inside a secret compartment using the space within the toilet pump in the bathroom as an entry and exit route to the hiding area in their attempt to evade arrest.

They were however arrested during the raid which started at 1.30am and ended about five hours later.

Perak Immigration director Meor Hezbullah Meor Abd Malik said apart from the women, others arrested during the raid were 10 men from Bangladesh.

"Of the total women arrested during the raid, 25 of them are from China, 16 from Vietnam, as well as one each from Thailand and Indonesia," he said.

Those arrested during the raid, Meor Hezbullah said, were among 175 foreigners and locals inspected by the department during the raid.

He added all illegal immigrants arrested during the raids, aged between 18 and 45, were sent to the Ipoh immigration depot here for investigation under the Immigration Act 1959/63.
