KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission has confirmed that a by-election will be held for the Mahkota state seat in Johor.
EC will hold a meeting on Aug 13 to discuss the by-election which must be held within 60 days.
"We received official notice from the Johor State Assembly Speaker, Datuk Mohd Puad Zarkashi on the vacancy of the Mahkota seat following the death of its incumbent Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain," EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak said in a statement
Earlier today, Puad said he had notified the EC of the seat's vacancy.
Sharifah, 64, passed away on Friday.
In the 2022 state polls, the Kluang Wanita Umno chief won the Mahkota state seat for Barisan Nasional in a four-cornered fight.
She won with a 5,166 vote majority against Pakatan Harapan, Perikatan Nasional and Warisan candidates.
